Looking At Medan City, Indonesia

Medan is a gritty city, not a tourist destination, largely made up of mid-rise, nondescript concrete buildings. Still, a few old gems to be found.

The non-skyline.

The main drag in old downtown has a handful of historic buildings, starting with the former city hall. A block peppered with Art Deco, Moderne style buildings.

Down by the river, slapped together houses for the poor.

Getting gaudy, a green mosque and gold office building.

Never enough A/C units to cool your building.

Typical grit and a humble classroom in a re-purposed historic wood mosque.

The Art Deco highlight in Medan, the Gedung BKS bank building.
