Japanese Feast

While in the Mt Fuji area, we stayed in a traditional Ryokan-style hotel that included dinner as part of the accommodation package. Some rice, soup and a few pieces of sushi? The place was pricy but we had no idea how elaborate our nightly feast would be. Bring on the spread!

Here's what the beginning of the meal looked like. A half dozen small dishes, each a work of culinary art (and mystery, just put it in your mouth and enjoy).

You also get soup, rice, other side dishes and something to grill and/or boil at the table. How about some uniquely marbled beef? The presentation is precious.

Some pickled vegetables. Gilding the lily: melted cheese on a rich shrimp.
