Catching Kellie's Castle Near Ipoh

Ah, the folly of the expat tycoon. Make a fortune in rubber, get a wife, build the trophy house. William Kellie Smith lived this life until his death from pneumonia in 1926 at the age of 56. A half-built mansion remained as his wife moved back to her native Scotland after Smith's death, leaving behind the now infamous Kellie's Castle.

Partially completed big boy on the hill. Smith brought in workers from Madras to build his mash up of Scottish, Moorish and Indian styles.

Interior details.

Imagined living room.

Views in the tower. Out back, ruins from the first house he built, something in an Italian villa style called Kellas House.

The place is a popular attraction, busloads of kids making the trek to see the silly aspirations of Industrialists from a century ago.
