The Otaku Culture In Akihabara

Akihabara is a Tokyo neighborhood that has developed an otaku (diehard fan) culture. For what? All things anime, manga, old video games, cute figurines, whatever brings out the otaku in you.

The neighborhood, all brightly lit, as if you've entered a video game.

Typical store, typical customer. Greeter at the Gundam Cafe, a restaurant devoted to the popular science fiction series.

They mean business. Huge, multi-level stores jam-packed with figurines, related toys.

Not sure what you want? Buy a grab bag or pump some yen into a ball dispenser and get a surprise.

How popular is the place? A group of otakus line up outside a store, waiting for it to open. Of course, since it's tidy Japan, the crowd is well regulated.
