The Ulug Beg And Abd al-Aziz Khan Madrasas In Bukhara

Kissing cousins. These impressive madrasas sit across from each other and look about the same style. Which is to say, the classic Silk Road madrasa design. Ulug Beg dates to 1417, Kahan to 1652. Tan bricks, blue tiles and a plan.

Front facade of the Ulug Beg madrasa. Somewhere over the door is an inscription reading, "Aspiration to knowledge is the duty of each Muslim man and woman." Noted.

Details. In the courtyard, a nice play of light on a section of dorm rooms. The amazing tile work at the side of the entrance. Curly.

Turning around at Ulug Beg, the Khan madrasa comes into view.

Oh, trippy. Looking up at the restored stalactite carving and painting work in the entranceway. The Khan madrasa still has a rough look to it, including patchy tiling on the dorms.

Some smalltime souvenir sellers are set up in the Khan courtyard. Slow day, little inventory.
