About 20 kilometers east of Khiva you'll find the 13th century resting place for Sheikh Mukhtar Vali, a Sufi hermit and saint. It looked good on his business card.
What also looks good is the mausoleum complex. It's out in the country a bit and surrounded by an expansive cemetery, two elements that help set the mood as a pilgrim destination.
The main mausoleum, complete with a blue tiled portico that rivals similar porticos located in old Khiva, in the Itchan Kala section of town.
Portico detail. The mausoleum has room for prayers, several intimate chambers, simple in ornamentation.
Gazing up at the simple, whitewashed dome. Beyond the mausoleum, a spread of tombs.
