Mighty Monuments Around Astana

Astana has a nice mix of public monuments scattered around town, a mix of Kazakh nationalist themes and some relics from the Soviet era.

Behold the Defenders of the Homeland Monument. The complex is a memorial to Soviet soldiers who fought in The Great Patriotic War, WWII and to Kazakh fighters in Silk Road times.

On the central column of the monument, the all powerful mother with a gold metal bowl. Everyone drinks when Mother offers. There's an eternal light and a frieze with ancient Kazakh warriors fighting their enemy, the Dzhungars.

Another war memorial, this time dedicated to Kazakhs who fought with the Soviets in Afghanistan.

Pope John Paul II makes an appearance on the grounds of a Catholic church. On the secular side, a golden student in a University plaza. Thrusting the fist of knowledge.

Three wise judges, outside the courthouse. You get Kazybek Bi, Tole Bi, and Aiteke Bi. They promoted unity of various Kazakh tribes in the 18th century.
