It can be hard to find original architecture in Malaysia, so many of the everyday buildings razed to make way for modern commerce. Even Chinese shophouses are replacements for more humble structures. In Melaka, you can see an original shophouse from the Dutch colonization era, built in the 1700s.
Street view: 8 Heeren Street is the shophouse on the left.
Inside, through a front room to the inner courtyard, featuring the classic shophouse design of an open air section for ventilation.
Small stairs leading to the upper floor. Front room. A later renovation raised the roofline.
Front room view, looking toward the street.
Still upstairs, a back veranda, overlooking the courtyard.
And that's a full look at an early shophouse. Real Simple, way back when.
