Chiang Mai is in Northern Thailand, which was once the land of the Lan Na or Lanna Kingdom. It existed from the 13th to the 18th centuries. There's now a nice museum in the center of Chiang Mai that's devoted to Lanna culture to give visitors a little taste of their history and customs.
