Shwenandaw Monastery In Mandalay

King Thibaw Min built himself a wooden extravaganza in 1878. Actually, he relocated his dad's - King Mindon - apartment. Something about haunted spirits. When in doubt, move it out. It turned out to be a good move as the monastery is now the only original building left from the Royal Palace complex.

It's a big temple of teak, heavily carved. In the spring of 2019, an ambitious restoration was in progress.

Front entrance. Delicate building, heavy steps.

Restoring the beauty, still just with teak wood. Carving detail, endless.

Inside, a gold hall.

Details. A small Buddha and some of the wall carvings.

Back in the hall, around the other side sits another Buddha statue.
