Empty Baku

Baku has done plenty of building and urban renewal to remake itself as a modern, architecturally significant world city. Sometimes your master plan starts with a big layout and then you let the buildings fill in during the next decade or so. That empty, public space can have an interesting life of its own.

Empty Sawara

Either Sawara has a huge commuter population arriving by car every day or somebody just likes little, empty lots. They're everywhere around town, creating an eerie sense of displacement.

Abandoned Kaohsiung

For a city of 2.7 million people, the town can feel awfully lonely, especially for an Asian city. Bangkok, Tokyo, Saigon, anyplace in India, always packed. Kaohsiung, abandoned.

For a photographer, the eerie stillness offered its own beauty.
