Aegina's old capital was Paleachora, in use from the ninth to 19th centuries. Today, not much remains of the rocky hillside village save for dozens of tiny stone churches. Some structures have been restored, most places have not. You can meander the hillside, taking paths between the churches.
The highlights are the interiors, simple rooms filled with religious icons.
The hillside.
Heading inside, a variety of icons, old and new, hidden, covered in cobwebs, everything you can imagine.

This must have been an amazing day of discovery as you walked through the paths into a glimpse of not just history but an intimate upclose peek into local present. I love adventures like this!
