In a week, Malaysians will go to the polls for national elections for the first time since 2013. Malaysia has only known one ruling party, UMNO (United Malays National Organization), which is expected to remain in power. Recently, we got to witness a rally that included opposition party BERSATU (Unite).
The opposition is all the more interesting this year because former UMNO head and Malaysia's longest-serving prime minister (from 1981 to 2003) Mahathir bin Mohamad now leads BERSATU.
So, imagine our surprise to see this BERSATU Cafe occupying the ground floor of UMNO headquarters in Kuala Selangor (west of Kuala Lumpur)?
First things first in Malaysia, which always means food. At the event, all manner of meat things on a stick, including love-shaped nuggets. Yum? Sated, time to get some political swag. Mahathir's mug on a T-shirt.
Night falls, time to rally.
Double dose of being on the big screen.
The press and other video recorders, clamoring for the entrance of the legendary Mahathir. Hello former prime minister!
Mahathir, getting his video time.
