Time For Tin Mining In Malaysia

Malaysia has gone through a few waves of economic exploitation. Today, it's all about the palm oil production, the glue that holds all your processed foods together. Before big palm, it was rubber for meeting your new roads. And before rubber, tin. The British showed up in the mid 1800s, the Chinese workers were imported and the ore containing tin was yanked from the hills in the jungle.

The town of Sungai Lembing, in the Eastern state of Pahang, was a major producer of tin and one of its mines has been turned into a museum. Time to head in.

Humble entrance.

Typical shaft and a distribution room. Deep.

The "million dollar" chamber. Self explanatory. Plastic, Village People-looking miners, less explanatory.

Fun funicular ride for the workers, doubtful they saw it that way. Dead end shaft.

Back outside, the last stop, only jungle ahead.
