Right in downtown Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, are the remnants of an old British colonial building, the former Land and Survey offices. What's left is a foundation and more than a dozen columns. Not much of a blank slate.
Good enough. Graffiti artists began covering the columns and back walls with art, starting around 2010. More recently, artists have organized murals around specific themes and have been allowed to leave their work up, undisturbed. The theme for the 2018 edition of "Pillars of Sabah" was each artist paying homage to someone who inspires him or her.
The "gallery."
The work has a nice variety of style.
Mixed media, looking like outsider art.
In the back, Chaplin makes an appearance. Traditional Sabah man.
Nothing lasts forever. 2019 arrives, time for a whitewash and on to the next show.
