Ballarat is the site of a seminal moment in Australia becoming a democracy. Way back in 1854, during the gold rush, miners became fed up with unfair prospecting license fees. On December 3rd, the government stormed their stockade, shutting down the rebellion.
Thirty men were killed. Long-term, miners received the right to vote and an abolishment of the licenses. Democracy was born.
