The Original British Consulate In Kaohsiung

A nice piece of British history is plunked atop a prominent hill in Kaohsiung, the Brits' first official consulate. The office was built and opened in 1879, in a strategic location right above the main port entrance. The British relocated to another port location by 1910, due to sediment buildup in the harbor.

The consulate housed several Taiwan government agencies before finally being restored and becoming a museum, opened in 2013.

The classically-styled consulate building.

Inside the building, a small series of rooms with maritime details and history.

A big diorama, showing the port in its infancy.

In another room, a curious collection of British royalty photographs, including Lady Diana and warped images of fancy houses. OK.

Back to the diorama, a prominent place for the old consulate building.
