Kathmandu was one of the big stops on the hippie trail way back when, a drop out hang out place on the circuit that included Berkeley, Marrakech, and Rishikesh, where the Beatles went to get some TM (Transcendental Meditation). While the scene is long gone, as that generation is now more interested in 401Ks than kilos, you can still see remnants of that time in the neighborhood nicknamed, of course, Freak Street.
The Haight-Ashbury of Kathmandu, just south of Durbar Square. A typical guest house, still taking poncho wearers the world over.
A place to chill. The hippie uniform, plenty of it and ready for export.
A slice of chocolate cake, the signature dessert from Snowman, one of the few original cafes still around. The sacred and profane come together, naturally. Whoa, freak out!
